El Hijo del Vikingo Wins AAA Mega Championship Just Days Before WWE x AAA Worlds Collide

El Hijo del Vikingo Wins AAA Mega Championship Just Days Before WWE x AAA Worlds Collide

El Hijo del Vikingo is back on top in AAA—and just in time for a showdown with WWE’s Chad Gable.

At AAA’s latest event, Vikingo defeated Alberto El Patron to reclaim the AAA Mega Championship, officially beginning his second reign with the title. His first run with the belt lasted a record-breaking 833 days, the longest in company history.

The timing of the win turned heads, especially since WWE had already promoted the upcoming WWE x AAA Worlds Collide event as a title match between Vikingo and Chad Gable—before the title change had even happened. That graphic aired during Raw, tipping off fans that a switch was likely coming.

Beyond the WWE promo slip-up, there was growing speculation that El Patron’s status as champion wasn’t sitting well with WWE leadership. While he held the title, El Patron had been completely absent from WWE’s promotional content following their acquisition of AAA, adding fuel to the theory that a change was inevitable.

With the belt now back around Vikingo’s waist, it clears the way for AAA to move forward with a Mega Championship defense that aligns more cleanly with WWE’s direction—and gives Gable a high-profile international match with real stakes.

As for Alberto El Patron, questions remain. His future with AAA—and any possible ties with WWE—are as unclear as ever. But one thing’s certain: he won’t be carrying the AAA Mega Title into any WWE building.

Rey Mysterio Promotes WWE x AAA Worlds Collide Event Amid Uncertainty Over AAA’s Future

Rey Mysterio Promotes WWE x AAA Worlds Collide Event Amid Uncertainty Over AAA’s Future

Rey Mysterio made a surprise virtual appearance at AAA’s latest event in Mexico City, officially promoting the upcoming joint WWE and AAA event Worlds Collide, set for June 7 at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. The WWE Hall of Famer didn’t mince words in his promo either.

“For nearly a century, Lucha Libre has redefined wrestling. And now the whole world is watching AAA and WWE, taking Lucha Libre higher, faster, better, farther. The future flies here,” Mysterio said in a video that opened the Saturday night event.

While WWE’s purchase of AAA hasn’t been finalized just yet, the two companies have already begun working together publicly—and that includes promotional content featuring one of the most recognizable luchadors of all time.

But behind the scenes, things aren’t nearly as polished. According to LuchaBlog, “AAA has not sat down its office or wrestlers as a group to explain what’s happening, what’s next and where that leaves the people who are currently working for AAA.” The outlet added that this weekend’s show was expected to be the place for that conversation, but many talent still remain in the dark.

In his latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer weighed in on what WWE’s pending acquisition could mean for the legendary Mexican promotion. “AAA will have more money for talent and television production, and could get a huge edge in exposure if TKO can upgrade the media deals for the promotion,” he wrote. Meltzer also noted that the real value will come if WWE starts sending over top-tier names like Mysterio, Penta, Fenix, or other U.S. stars that can help boost local shows.

June’s Worlds Collide event could be the first glimpse into how this partnership will work—and how it will impact the future of Lucha Libre globally.
